About Mark Cheramie, LCSW

Mark Cheramie, LCSW holds a B.A. from the University of New Orleans and a Master of Social Work Degree from Tulane University. Raised in the vibrant heart of New Orleans, Mark's journey in the field of therapy is marked by his deep connection to the joyful spirit of the city. With over 30 years of experience, he blends warmth, mindfulness, and innovation to his work.

Drawing from his roots as a jazz drummer, Mark is able to utilize the art of improvisation in the therapeutic process. Like jazz, improvisation in therapy involves a willingness to listen deeply to others while co-creating new patterns of thoughts and actions.

A improvisationist exists in each and everyone of us.

He is extensively trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, having attended workshops with the founder of CBT, Dr. Aaron Beck. Mark specializes in working with both individuals and couples, drawing from his experiences and training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples  and the Ackerman Institute for the Family. This approach, recognized as a gold standard in couples therapy, helps couples navigate their journey towards effective communication, increased intimacy, and deeper connections.

In 2007, Mark embarked on a profound personal and professional journey by training with Jack Kornfield, a pioneer in modern Buddhist Psychology. His continuous learning includes yearly trainings with Jack Kornfield and the teachers at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, further enriching his practice with the transformative benefits of mindfulness and Buddhist psychology.

Mark's professional journey began as a staff therapist at an Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital in Santa Fe, New Mexico. While there, he developed and led a weekly family therapy module which focused on the resolution of intergenerational trauma. Returning to New Orleans in 1993, Mark began a private practice which focused on adolscent, adult, and couples therapy. Mark became a preferred provider for Tulane University Student Health Services and the Jesuit School of New Orleans.

He is thrilled to be a part of the intentional community of therapists at Greenwich Psychotherapy Associates.
